boca do lobo

‘diamond’ side board

boca do lobo is a portuguese furniture manufacturer that combines traditional artisans technique with
contemporary design. boca do lobo’s furniture is definitely not for the faint of heart either, their ornate
and elaborate designs combine baroque inspired flourishes with faceted and sleek lines. the company
has a number of hard goods in their collection including a series of sideboards with mismatched drawers
as seen in ‘soho’ and ‘mondrian’. another standout piece is the ‘diamond’ side board which features
a faceted front panel covered in a rich violet and a shining gold interior.

Sotirios Papadopoulos, Ennezero, ecolightinside eco paint, eli eco paint, demosign exhibit, Soho Gallery Milan, luminescent paint, eco-friendly paint, Milan Furniture Fair, Fullmoon sideboard

We are captivated by the lunar visions created in this glowing ‘Fullmoon’ credenza. Designed by Sotirios Papadopoulos for ENNEZERO, this intriguing piece brings a realistic recreation of the moon’s surface to light with a luminescent paint. Despite looking very chemical-intensive and unsustainable, the glow-in-the-dark paint is actually an ‘ecological powder’ that’s been modified into a substance called ELI, or ‘Ecolightinside.’

We haven’t been able to get the whole sustainable scoop on the science behind the “eco paint”, but if it’s as environmentally friendly as the designer claims then we’re all for it. We’re starstruck by the ‘Fullmoon,’ and also impressed with the multi-disciplinary approach that Papadopoulos takes in his work. Not only did he design the cabinet, he also invented the “eco paint” that gives it its unique look, and curated the ‘dEMOsign’ exhibition that features the cabinet. The exhibition was hosted by the SOHO gallery as part of this year’s Milan Furniture Fair.

The ‘Fullmoon’ sideboard will go into production, however, the novelty status of the design is being pushed to the max with only twenty-four pieces being made in a strictly limited-edition run.

Iannone Designs, Iannone Designs cork mosaic sideboard, ICFF 2008, International Contemporary Furniture Fair 2008, ICFF New York 2008, Inhabitat ICFF 2008, renewable materials, natural cork furniture, FSC certified furniture, formaldehyde free plywoods, locally sourced lumber, deeryiannone

This spring’s ICFF brought some stunning new treats from one of Inhabitat’s perennial favorites, Iannone Designs. The star of Iannone’s ICFF booth was this wonderful Cork Mosaic Credenza that features a charming woodland tableau formed from variegated layers of sustainably harvested cork. Its sprightly reliefs of birds, deer and branches secures Iannone’s spot as the epitome of eco-chic.

Iannone infuses an elegant mod aesthetic with a top-notch assortment of sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Their designs incorporate “a variety of materials chosen for their intrinsic beauty and eco-friendly properties. These include FSC plywoods and formaldehyde free plywoods, locally sourced lumber from managed forests and sustainable materials such as bamboo and sorghum board.”

We love how this credenza champions the cause of cork, a natural, renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable material. Iannone inlaid different shades and textures of cork to create the tableau, admirably expressing the wooden texture of the trees and the deer’s dark brown fur. The sideboard’s frame is constructed out of solid walnut and it’s been hand finished with a non-toxic oil.

Yiorgos Eleftheriades Athens, Papercut interior sculpture, dARCH Studio Athens, eco-friendly materials, recycled materials, sustainable interior design, cardboard paper sculpture, Yeshop1

We love this beautifully sculpted cardboard mille-feuille that lines the walls of Yiorgos Eleftheriades‘ Yeshop in Athens. Dubbed “Papercut”, the project was a collaboration between the fashion designer and dARCH Studio. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to interior design, synthesizing elements of fashion and architecture into a streamlined, self-illuminated, biomorphic installation that was handmade using all eco-friendly materials.

dARCH Studio founder and architect Elina Drossou said “The need to synthesize the two different approaches to design was the focal point of this project. Concepts and practices used in fashion design were incorporated as organizational principles during the design and the construction phases of the project.”

The installation is composed entirely of re-purposed packing cartons, and was constructed around the space’s existing furniture to create a seamless, streamlined effect. dARCH Studio” built the fluid framework from 1,500 sheets of 5mm thick corrugated cardboard, which were cut into strips and then carefully pasted along an entire wall of the 90 square meter shop. Integrated illumination transforms the built-in boxes to display cases that dynamically frame Eleftheriades’ wares. The innovative installation cost 2,500 Euros, and is a stunning example of thinking outside of the down-cycling loop.
